Can Bats Walk on the Ground?

Looking at whether bats can walk on the ground Bats are among the most intriguing mammals that we are aware of, largely because of their nocturnal habits and their echolocation which allows them to navigate through their habitat and find prey despite their blindness.

We are accustomed to the notion of flying bats, but that does not mean that walking bats don’t exist. Of the 1200 species of bats that exist in this world, two of them can walk on the ground: the vampire bat and the burrowing bat.

The vampire bat can traverse the ground at a decent speed, thanks to its strong front and hind limbs, which also tend to be thicker than those of an average bat.

Burrowing bat

The burrowing bat is also known as the lesser short-tailed bat. It has a biological structure which enables it to walk on the ground. It possesses claws at the base of its toes, grooves on its feet as well as at the elbow joints. This bat has strong wrists which enable it to have a good grip on the ground and move forward.

A lot of bats can climb though

Some of you will have seen a bat climbing a tree or a similar structure, but that does not mean that it can do walk on the ground. You see, all bats can climb because they have tiny claws that allow them to attain a good grip on the surface, while their thumbs enable them to scale the structures. As you can see, climbing and walking are two different actions, and while bats can certainly manage the former, not all of them can pull off the latter.

Why can’t most of the bats walk?

This question arises naturally when one considers what bats are capable of, and wonders why they can’t pull off something so simple as walking on the ground. Well, most of the bats have very thin and fragile bones which make it difficult for them to drag themselves along the ground.

Similarly, the claws at the ends of their front and hind limbs are very small and curved and don’t exactly provide the best grip on a surface. The point being, an average bat’s body simply is not suited for the relatively complicated task of walking. They have a light frame which is ideal for flying, but unsuitable for covering distance on the ground.

It is worth noting that the inability to walk isn’t an undesirable trait. Far from it, in fact. By sticking to the skies, bats have a better chance of avoiding many of the dangers and predators that their land-dwelling compatriots have to face, and that’s a good thing.
